well for most banks one can now do telephone banking as well as online banking, so there's that side of it which lets you do it from home. so transfering money and checking it's gone in aren't that difficult even without a pc.
As to walking all the way to the bank and carrying cash around etc. tbh that's not something that's ever bothered me. I do it all the time if I move money from my bank account to my savings or visa versa coz it's easiest way to do it. I've been known to carry a couple of thousand in cash when doing that. Now I know that's not all the time, but when I do it doesn't bother me.
I guess I'm old fashioned, I actually much prefer to work with cash than anything else. _________________ My Website www.cashonthenet.co.uk

I don't think walking around with hundreds of pounds in cash is a big deal. Nobody is going to know you've got it and if they give you it in £20s its not like its a huge bundle to have in your bag.
I think cheques are being got rid of becuase so few people use them that its not cost effective to keep the systems in place to process them.
As its several years away people do have enough time to make other arrangements such as phone banking/online banking, etc. I suspect there will be a number of options offered by the different bnks too. _________________ If you sit by the river long enough, the bodies of all your enemies will float by. |

Phone banking I trust even less than online banking!!
Anyway, a perfect example of me using my cheques today - I owed my parents some money. They need that money on monday morning so they can pay off the credit card.
I can't get to the bank before monday morning to pay them the monday (local banks closed weekends and I'm not paying £3+ bus fare to go into town). It's also more than I can get out of a cash machine.
So I wrote a cheque - my mum can now go into the bank and pay off her credit card bill (using my cheque as part) early monday morning.
Inconvenience to me - less than a minute to write a cheque.
Inconvenience to my mum - none, she's got to go to the bank anyway!
Neither of us have phone/online bank, but if we did we'd have to wait agessssss in a phone queue to make the transfer and agessssss in another phone queue to check the transfer (different banks).
If it was online - ages for our super slow internet connection to load up and then all the fag of logging in, checking account details to make the transfer and then agessss logging into the other bank account to make sure it's gone through!
Oh and the cheque I could make directly to the credit card company, but if it was online or phone, we'd have to wait a good few days before the banks transferred the money across and only then can pay off the credit card bill!!
I just think cheques have a lot of uses still and are very convenient to a lot of people. I see no reason to scrap them, they really can't be costing the banks much! _________________ Check out my website for great ways to make money online! http://money-making-methods.co.uk

Most telephone banking is automated so for basic transfers from one account to another you don't need to wait in a queue because you don't actually need to speak to a human.
Also, big changes have been made in banking and, even between different banks, transfers do go through much quicker these days.
And as Vi says, cheques do still take a couple of days to clear - even though it doesn't actually take the banks that long to process them! _________________ If you sit by the river long enough, the bodies of all your enemies will float by. |
